Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now?

September 3rd, 2008 admin Posted in Internet No Comments »

Google Chrome logo Google’s made their new beta web browser Chrome available for download.  Chrome seems to be very fast, faster then Firefox 3 and IE8 and Opera. Loads all flash content really quick. Very impressed so far. Having individual processes for each tab is a great design, and makes much more of a difference in overall performance once you’ve got a lot of tabs opening and closing than I might have expected. The ability to make desktop "app" shortcuts for things like GMail is also nice, and it really is VERY fast.

Access Blocked Websites; Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN - NEW UPDATED

September 1st, 2008 admin Posted in How to, Internet, Tips and Tricks 1 Comment »

Access Blocked Websites Most work places, universities, schools block users from accessing social networking web sites, email, instant messenger services etc. If your organization is using advanced firewalls or websense blocking, most of the methods like using proxy web sites, alternative backdoor web sites also don’t work. Proxy websites allows us to bypass your current ISP’s IP and connect to targeted website with a different IP; thus hiding our actual origin from detectable. Get the websites here.

I’ll show you some ways how to access blocked content like instant messengers ( Google talk , Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger, Facebook, Orkut, MySpace Gmail, Yahoo mail, etc ) using different routes. The methods listed below are ordered simple to advanced.

Access Blocked Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger, Live Messenger, AOL Messenger

The work around to access blocked Instant Messenger is to use Web Messengers. Web Messenger are very easy to use as there is no need to download and install any software/plugins. Most of the alternate web messengers listed below would have already been blocked for some, but try once to make sure

Method 1. Most Common alternate Web Messengers.

The below links will most likely not blocked by even websense. http://uziz.net/ is very new and uses javascript to login to im services.

Method 2. Here is the list of currently available Gtalk service servers:
http://izuz.net/gtalk/ (Main server, *recommended* )
http://uziz.net/ (Secondary server, new and works mostly)
http://demo.java2script.org/gtalk/ (Demo server)
https://izuz.net/gtalk/ (With SSL-enabled)

Method 3. Multiple Instant Message Services Available

Beside web Google Talk, they have already added three other web IM services:
(1) Windows Live Messenger/MSN ( http://izuz.net/msnlive/ )
(2) Yahoo! Messenger/Y! Messenger  ( http://izuz.net/ymessenger/ )
(3) AOL Instant Messenger/AIM  ( http://izuz.net/aim/ )
All these web IM services can co-exist inside one window: http://uziz.net/

U.S. Average Internet speed is 2.3 mbps while Japan has 63 mbps.

August 13th, 2008 admin Posted in Internet No Comments »

Speedmatters.org Speedmatters.org is project of CWA ( Communications Workers of America ). Speed Matters has released their second annual state-by-state Internet speed report. It has very interesting information about Internet Speed in U.S. It also shows how Internet Speed varies in each state.

"Our report found the average U.S. Internet speed was 2.3 megabits per second (mbps), representing a minimal gain of 0.4 mbps over last year’s average speed. At this rate, it will take us more than a hundred years to catch up to Japan, where average speeds are estimated at 63 mbps."

Take the Speed Matters Speed Test, which shows interesting statistics and comparisons. See my Speedtest comparison report. Not bad compared to what is in U.S.

Google Reader - One simple feature request

August 12th, 2008 admin Posted in Internet, Software No Comments »

I use Google Reader all day checking my feeds. Unlike the desktop RSS readers, this helps me keep in sync and saved multiple installations. There are lot of new features added recently, but search is what I mainly use and love it.

I don’t use a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Just ‘j’ and ‘k’ - next/previous item, keep me going. Sometimes, ‘m’ and ’s’ - mark read / toggle star also helps. ‘?’ displays all keyboard shortcuts.

I always wish, one small feature would exist in Google Reader where I could maximize the feed view and hide other items on the top ( Home, All Items, Starred, Your stuff) which I rarely use.

Just a small arrow, like the one to hide left pane, can be added beside ‘Add Subscription’ and viola, I can see all my feeds and keeps me aware of how many feeds to read.

( just for screen shot, Changed Show to all )

Secure the Gmail connection always

July 24th, 2008 admin Posted in Email, Internet No Comments »

Gmail uses the https ( secure ) connection only for while authenticating the username and password. This way, the email messages are not secure and can be read by a hacker by using a freely available packet sniffing program.

Google is now rolling out this new option to make Gmail always use secure connection. The only drawback is it might slow down the mail, but with the new faster Internet connections, it shouldn’t be an issue. This new option should come up in Setting menu.
